Well, it's been a very busy, very difficult, but very rewarding three
years since we started Animals Taiwan. We've grown a lot, moved into
our own holding centre, taken on three staff, and been in countless
newspapers and magazines and on many TV and radio programs. We have
worked with the Jane Goodall Institute to put on a great parade with
Dr Goodall herself and received a hand-written letter from the great
lady commending us and thanking us for all the work we've done making
a difference to the lives of so many suffering animals on this island.
To date, we have directly helped well over 400, and that alone should
be enough to make you very proud. Over the years, you have also raised
several million NT dollars to help these poor beings.
成立動物台灣的這三年來大家非常忙碌辛苦,但也非常值得,我們成長了許多、搬進專屬的中心、聘請了三位雇員、登上了無數報章雜誌的版面,也接受許多電視與廣播的訪問。我們與珍古德協會合作,與古德博士一起遊行,也收到這位偉大女性親筆寫的信,讚賞並感謝我們在挽救這座島上受苦受難動物方面所做得一切努力。目前我們已直接幫助了超過四百隻動物,單獨這一點就足夠讓各位深感驕傲,在這幾年來,各位也募集到數百萬台幣,協助這些可憐的動物們。
Now we are about to become a national association, a legally
recognized non-profit organization. This means we can grow even
bigger, have greater influence, attract larger donations and more
support, and help so many more of our fellow animals. It also means we
have to be better organized, make better use of our volunteers, and
get everything in perfect working order.
現在我們即將成為一個合法的全國性非營利組織,這表示我們能夠將規模擴大、發揮更廣泛的影響力、獲得更大型的捐款與支持,並且幫助更多動物,同時這也表示我們的組織必須更良善、更加善用所有義工,並且確保一切都有條不紊。
And that is why I think it is time for me to step down. Animals Taiwan
needs a professional to lead us into the next great phase. We need
someone who knows how to get the best out of people, how to get
everything looking good and running smoothly, and how to instill
confidence in the staff, volunteers, supporters and donors. I am not
that person—not at the moment, anyway.
因此我認為交棒的時刻已經來臨。動物台灣需要一位專業人才,領導大家步入下一階段。我們需要一位懂得人盡其才、讓檯面上下的所有工作都順利進行,同時能夠在僱員、義工、支持者與贊助者心中都灌輸信心的領導人,而這個人並不是我,至少目前不是。
Animals Taiwan is my baby, my dream, my proudest achievement. But it
has taken a lot out of me, I have given all I can give of myself, and
I have already lost far more than I ever wanted to lose. I am tired.
My apartment is a constant mess, as is the holding centre, my own
finances, my personal life, and my health. I feel that, in giving too
much, I may have actually done more harm than good. It's time for me
to take a step back and take a little time for myself, do some of the
things I've been intending to do, see some of the people I dearly
miss, and experience some of the things that I have long dreamed of
experiencing. I'm going to have some 'me' time.
動物台灣是我的心血結晶與夢想,也是我最引以為傲的成就,但同時它幾乎掏空了我,我已經全心全意的付出,也比預期中失去了更多。我累了,我的公寓、中心、財務狀況、私生活、及我的健康全都一團混亂,我感覺付出太多,反而造成更多損害。現在的我需要往後退一步,把時間花在自己身上,做一些我一直想做的事、看一些我一直想念的人、並且體會一些我夢想許久的經歷。我要擁有一些『自我』的時間。
I intend to leave Taiwan around the middle of next year, or sooner if
possible. I will visit my friends and family in England, and then
embark on a journey, traveling through some of the more relaxing and
beautiful places on the planet, and experiencing some of the wildlife
wonders of the world. No doubt I will rescue a dog or two along the
way, and volunteer with many worthwhile animal-welfare groups,
learning how other organizations do things. I'll pay my way with
writing and photography, which I do already and have been able to
improve greatly with all the practice I've had writing for AT.
我打算在明年中離開台灣,可能的話會更早。我會回英國拜訪朋友與親人,然後前往世界上最美麗的地方旅遊,並且體驗大自然奇景。毫無疑問地我也會沿途拯救幾隻狗,並且在動物福利組織擔任義工,同時學習其他組織如何經營。我會像現在一樣藉由寫作與攝影賺取旅費,動物台灣的工作經驗在這些方面對我助益頗多。
But I'll also need to save some considerable funds before I go, and
that means I need to get a proper day job as soon as possible. I hope
we can find someone to replace me within the next four weeks. Brandy
has proven to be a great asset to Animals Taiwan, as I knew she would
- she's even better with the dogs than I am - but I think Brandy would
prefer to work under someone who can give her clear instruction and
inspiring leadership rather than fulfill that role herself. Now that
we are to be a registered charity, we should be able to attract the
right kind of person, especially if we make the salary dependent on
the funds that person is able to bring in to the organization. This
person is out there, I promise you, and I have already started putting
the word out.

I will try to find other accommodation, but I'm happy to stay in the
apartment until I leave the island in return for taking care of the
dogs in the evening and doing other work for AT. The car will stay
with AT, of course, and I'll just use it until I have been reimbursed
for the money I have paid out on that in advance. I will need the
holding centre and cars transferred into AT's name. I hope AT can take
care of my dogs until I have settled somewhere and can send for them;
I'm sure we can come to an arrangement about fees.
我會試著找另一個住處,但我很樂意待在中心直到離開台灣為止,以便晚上照顧狗,並且替動物台灣做其他的工作。當然車會留在動物台灣,我會使用到我拿回當初所預先支付的金額為止。我需要將中心與車轉移到動物台灣的名下,也希望動物台灣能照顧我的狗們,直到我在某處安頓好,再將牠們帶來,我確定在費用方面可以有圓滿的安排。
I hope I will be able to function as a director for Animals Taiwan,
but that will be up to the members. I am also happy to do all that I
can via the Internet, whether that's writing, emailing, putting
together movies, or whatever—I intend to have lots of free time now,
so don't raise your eyebrows, OK. ☺
希望我能夠擔任動物台灣的董事,但這得由成員決定,我也樂意藉由網路奉獻心力,無論是寫作、電郵、拍攝影片都可以。我現在打算擁有許多空閒時間,所以別太訝異!
I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for helping me try to make
a difference here. It's been an incredibly satisfying and rewarding
experience for me in most ways. I'm sorry I disappointed so many of
you, but I promise you I gave it my very best shot. I sincerely look
forward to seeing things improve for you all and the animals under
someone else's leadership.
